Out Everybody!!!

I put my avocado plants (what's left of them), dragon fruit plants, and citura tangerine outside in the greenhouse. I don't know if the avocado plants will make it. I left them out on the porch one night when it got down to 18F degrees, and they lost all their leaves and some of the branches were black. I pruned the trees back to where I found evidence of green cambium. I hope they recover. The dragon fruit is growing steadily, but is quite spindly due to low light conditions. Even though I have them by a window, the new branches are thin. I hope the greenhouse will either afford the plant more light and thus thicker branches, or I hope the plant goes dormant so that it is using its resources to grow weak branches. The citura tangerine was just in the way. My other citrus trees are doing well in the greenhouse, so I didn't feel that moving the citura would be a detriment to its growth.

White Sugarloaf Pineapple Blooms

The white pineapples are blooming, and they did so voluntarily. I have been meaning to enclose them in a plastic bag with some apples but never got around to it. They've kind of been neglected, having little to no sunlight and scant amounts of water. I hope I get some big, juicy, sweet pineapples.

Clementine Going to Flower

My clementine orange tree is going to flower.  It's been a long time since she's showed signs of vigor. I hope I can get some fruit to set and the tree continues to grow.

dragon fruit

my dragon fruit plant has come a long way over the summer. perhaps one of the five plants fruit this coming summer. the Physical Graffiti plant seems to be the most vigorous.

air layered tangerine

The air layer tangerine is very vigorous. I hope to see fruit in the next year or two. Meanwhile I still have the original plant.  It's about six foot tall.  Maybe the original plant will produce fruit this year.  She's getting too tall to keep in the green house, in the house, or on the porch.  I'll have to chop her back or put her in the ground.

Over-wintering

I've got a variety of over-wintering strategies in effect: plants in the house, plants on the porch, plants in the greenhouse, and plants covered with hay.

Delight dragon fruit

The delight plant has really plumped up. The new branch is growing nicely.

Pineapples

Here are my more mature pineapple plants.  No sign of fruit.  I hope they don't wait until winter to fruit like the last plant did.  The fruit does not grow well without sunlight.

Avocados

The trees are growing still. No fruit yet.

Physical Graffiti

The plant is growing quickly.  Perhaps it will reach the top of the trellis by the end of the month.

Physical Graffiti and Other Hylocereus

The physical graffiti is growing rapidly.  She has doubled her length since she arrived.  I hope the stem continues to grow up to or past the top of the trellis.  If so, I will prune her to stimulate side branches.  I would love for her to produce a fruit or two this summer.

The other dragon fruit are doing well.  The delight cutting has not grown a side stem yet.  None-the-less it is plump and looks healthy.

Physical Graffiti

Growing by leaps and bounds.

Seedling tangerine surgery

Since my seedling tangerine may get too tall to bring indoors before it ever fruits, I had to do a little surgery.  I t-bud grafted 2 meyer lemon buds and 4 clementine buds.  These grafted buds are on the lower portion of the trunk so that that space is fruitful. The upper part of the tree remains seedling tangerine.  Hopefully those upper branches will start bearing asap.  If not, I am attempting to air layer an upper branch so that I can propagate the seedling from node 61 and above.  Hopefully the air layer will be ready for potting up around mid june.

Delight

My delight dragon fruit has a tiny root.  The picture is fuzzy, but the upper most tip is a root.

Amazing!

I can't believe how fast dragon fruit grows.  It may grow even faster when outdoors.

Seedling Dragon Fruit

The seedlings planted back in September are elongating and plumping up.  The respond quickly to favorable growing conditions.

Seed grown pineapple

I have 3 tiny pineapple plants grown from seeds I collected this summer.  They are so tiny and delicate.  It's a wonder that seedlings would ever be able to survive in the wild.  I guess nature's back-up plan is all those slips, suckers, and shoots.
